More than 20 million American adults have a mood disorder, including depression and bipolar disorder. And an additional 40 million have an anxiety disorder. These numbers don’t include the average worrier or person who suffers an occasional bout of the blues.
For depression alone, the annual cost for treatment and lost wages may be as high as $52 billion.
It’s no wonder that many people are searching for the best mood enhancement supplements or other mood-enhancing alternatives to drugs.

The Best Mood Enhancement Supplements
St. John’s Wort:One of the most used
herbs for enhancing mood. It is a yellow-flowered plant containing many
chemical compounds that may have medicinal effects. “Even though the evidence
is mixed, it’s better for St. John’s wort than for other herbs,” says Adriane
Fugh-Berman, MD, associate professor, Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Master’s Program, Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown
University School of Medicine. Available as
capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, and teas, a typical dose of St. John’s wort
ranges from 900 to 1,200 milligrams a day, and it should be taken for at least
one to three months, just as with pharmaceutical anti-depressants, to see the best effect.
Valerian: a herbal remedy created from dried roots, often taken as a sleep aid and sometimes for anxiety. Valerian ismost commonly used for sleep disorders, especially the inability to sleep (insomnia). Valerian is also used orally for anxiety and psychological stress, but there is limited scientific research to support these uses. It seems to act like a sedative on the brain and nervous system. Most studies show that taking Valerian can reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep by about 15 to 20 minutes and seems to improve sleep quality. Doses of 400-900 mg of Valerian extract taken up to 2 hours before bed seem to work best. Continuous use for several days, up to four weeks, may be needed before an effect is noticeable. There is contradictory evidence about the effectiveness of Valerian for anxiety. Early research shows that taking Valerian may reduce anxiety, however, other studies have shown no effect. Research suggests that taking Valerian plus St. John’s wort improves symptoms of depression. Taking higher doses of Valerian (1000 mg) with St. John’s wort may improve depression symptoms faster than low doses (500 mg).
Lavender: Lavender is commonly used for anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, depression, headache and pain.
Lavender contains an oil that seems to have sedating effects and might relax certain muscles. It also seems to have antibacterial and antifungal effects. Some research shows that taking 80-160 mg of a lavender oil product (Silexan, Dr Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. KG) by mouth for 6-10 weeks improves anxiety and
sleep and prevents anxiety recurrence in people with mild-to-severe anxiety. It is unclear if using lavender oil as aromatherapy improves anxiety, as results from research are conflicting.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Some researchers have found that cultures that eat foods with high levels of omega-3s have lowerlevels of depression. Fish oil also seems to boost the effects of antidepressants and may help the depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder. It is found in cold-water fish and certain vegetable oils, and is available as a supplement, Henry Emmons, MD, recommends a dose of 2,000 to 4,000 milligrams or more when taken for mood problems. The most common side effects from fish oil are indigestion and gas. Getting a supplement with a coating might help.
CBD: CBD interacts with the body through the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) or endocannabinoid system. The ECS regulates the body’s homeostasis, or general state of balance, impacting such functions as mood, sleep, appetite, hormone regulation, and pain and immune response. Evidence suggests that the cannabinoids can be beneficial for managing mood and anxiety disorders because of their ability to modulate the body’s endocannabinoid system. CBD has been the focus of more than 23,000 published studies about cannabinoids in relation to various medical indications including anxiety, epilepsy, inflammation, cancer and chronic pain.
